This is one happy Canadian music lover today! Amazon has announced that it will open it’s MP3 store for the global community this year.
I own an Ipod. I will probably own an Ipod for a long time. I love it. But I still don’t like the fact that the music I buy from the Itunes store, can only be played on an Ipod. What if I ever decided to switch players? I’ll have to buy my music again.
When the Itunes store announced it would sell MP3 songs, I thought it was great. But since then, I think I’ve been able to buy maybe 2 songs in that format since most are only offered in the DRM format.
I get that if you bought music on a cassette it doesn’t entitle you to get a free CD. I don’t like it, but I get it.
To me, if you buy the music digitally, you should not be buying it for one single device (or range of devices). You should be able to take it with you.
I don’t share my music with others and I only use it for my enjoyment. But I don’t want to be held hostage to one type of music player.
The players that only accept WMV format are only marginally better. The world has a digital music standard and it should stick to it.
If music was priced well and easily available, I bet that many many people would gladly pay for it. After all, we want there to be music in the future. We don’t want to have a silent world because everyone stopped buying music.
Three cheers to Amazon for giving us a real alternative to the Apple store. Hopefully this will finally encourage them to start selling everything in MP3 format.
